Goodbye Jillian; Welcome (back) April

Today is one of those horrible, no good, very bad days. It finally happened.

After more than a decade of working with me, my wonderful assistant Jillian notified me in May that she was leaving.

This is great news for Jillian.  Her husband’s business is taking off, and Jillian is leaving to go to work with him.  This will allow Jillian to be around her husband and kids more than ever.

But it wasn’t great for me.

I worried about how to go forward — how to find someone I can trust, how to find someone who I could train to do the job, how to find someone who I knew would get along with clients, etc.

After a little bit of denial, I put together an ad and posted it on Indeed.com.

In a stroke of luck, I also posted on Facebook that I was looking for a new assistant, and if anyone had suggestions, to let me know.

Almost immediately, April Larsh, a former legal assistant, posted a witty comment on my Facebook post joking about coming back.  We went back and forth for a few minutes before April texted me saying, “No.  I’m serious.  I’ll come back.”

April’s kids are getting older.  They don’t need her as much anymore, and, in April’s words, she wants to get back to using her brain.

So that’s what we’re doing.

Today is Jillian’s last day as she leaves to go work with her husband, and Monday, April Larsh will be coming back on board to serve as my legal assistant.

If you were around when April worked with us the first time, you’ll know  that she’s great. And for those of you who haven’t yet met April, you’ll soon learn about her.

We’ve been slowly teaching her the few things that are different — that we don’t have paper files anymore, that courthouse documents are now filed electronically, and such.  And we’re getting her up to speed on our clients.

So give her a couple of weeks and  then feel free to reach out and say “Hi” once again.
