Are there different types of skull fractures or are they all the same?

Yes, there are four different types of skull fractures. They are:

  • Basilar fractures – occur at the base of the skull
  • Depressed fractures – blunt force trauma causes bone to be displace inward
  • Linear fractures – spread through the entire thickness of the skull
  • Diastatic fractures – when one fracture line crosses at least one skull suture (most common in infants)
