The Risks of E-Bikes for Kids: Why Safety Precautions Are Essential

Are you letting your kids ride e-bikes without considering the risks?

As I’m driving around my neighborhood, I see more and more kids riding e-bikes. While I think it’s great that kids are getting out of the house and into the outdoors, I also hope that parents are making sure that their kids are safe.

The Rise of E-Bike Injuries

E-bikes can be dangerous. They are faster than regular bikes so kids’ crashes can be more consequential.

The statistics bear that out. New statistics show that there has been a 400% increase in e-bike related brain injuries in recent years. That turns out to be a lot of kids. In 2022, there were over 8,000 kids treated at U.S. hospitals for e-bike related brain injuries. And what’s worse is that data shows that brain injuries sustained in e-bike crashes are more severe than those sustained in pedal-powered bike crashes.

The Importance of Helmets for E-Bike Safety

Why is there an increase in brain injuries? Obviously, by nature, the more people you have on e-bikes, the more injuries you will have. But it’s more than that. As the popularity of e-bikes has increased and become more mainstream, the percentage of kids using helmets has decresed.

This combination can be deadly. Data shows that kids riding e-bikes without proper helmet usage are twice as likely to sustain head injuries in a crash. There is perhaps no more important body part to protect in a growing and developing than the brain. So if you’re kid is riding an e-bike, protect your kid by making sure your child is properly wearing a helmet.

Additional Safety Precautions for E-Bike Riders

Helmets aren’t the only way to help protect your e-bike users. Other simple things you can do includes:

–Using reflective gear and lights to increase visibility.
–Supervising younger riders and ensuring they understand traffic rules.
–Choosing e-bikes with speed limits appropriate for their age and skill level.
