The Deadliest Roads in East Texas

Spring break is soon upon us, and many Texans are planning to drive to other locations to spend time with their families. During this time, there needs to be a great degree of caution when out on the highways. This is because there are going to be more people on the roads, and the chances of being involved in a crash increase significantly during spring break (and then the summer). After all, people drink and drive.

To begin with, Texas is noted nationwide for its higher-than-average rates of serious car accidents. This prompted MoneyGeek to conduct a study to determine what the eleven deadliest roads in East Texas are. However, to find out further information on other counties in Texas, visit HERE.

The study was interesting in that it also pointed out other locations across Texas where the vehicular crash rate was high. Twenty-five percent of fatal crashes were related to drunk driving. The road with the higher number of deaths, I-20, logged a 2 percent rate of fatalities. I-20 is a behemoth road consisting of 636 miles from east to west across the state. During the three-year study period, that stretch of highway witnessed 214 deadly wrecks.

Furthermore, three out of 10 of the deadliest 5-mile sections of road in the state are in Dallas. They include the Texas 12 Loop. From 2017 to 2019 there were 42 fatal crashes. There are also two locations on I-45 in Houston that rank on the 10 deadliest 5-mile stretches. I-45 is the deadliest of all roads in Harris County. It racked up 38 deadly collisions from 2017 to 2019.

“What it boils down to,” said Austin car accident attorney, Brooks Schuelke, “is that anywhere in Texas can be dangerous to drive – for various reasons, including speeding, DWI-DUI, and road conditions.”
