Text Messaging While Driving? Maybe Not In Austin

On October 19,  Griffin Jones, an Austin toddler, was seriously injured in a car wreck near Bastrop.  His family stopped to make a turn when they were rear-ended.  Griffin's parents think that they were hit because the other driver was distracted by a text message.

With any luck, Griffin's tragedy may be the last in Austin to occur due to people text messaging while driving.  Yesterday, the City of Austin's public safety task force approved a resolution that could lead to a ban on texting while driving and a requirement that motorists use hands-free devices.

Council member Mike Martinez, who is leading the effort, says, "It is something that needs to be done.  When you see accidents that have happened or you hear about near-misses, it is just a step we can take to ensure the safety of our citizens."

I'll try and keep you posted on where this goes.  In the meantime, some our most popular blog posts have involved topics about texting while driving.  If you are interested, you can read our text messaging while driving resource post, or other posts here, here, here and here.
