Car Wrecks Pose A Great Risk For Austin Women

Fox 7 News ran an interesting story last night called Driving to Death, where they discussed a recent article in Self magazine that declared Austin's roads the 5th most dangerous roads in the country for women.  According to the story, Self reviewed records from the Centers for Disease Control and determined that Austin women's rate of fatalities from car wrecks was 45% more than the national average.

The reporter also interviewed an Austin Police Department spokeswoman and a professor at UT.  The APD spokeswoman denied that Austin roads were any more dangerous for women, sying that the numbers show that for rate of fatalities Austin is right in line with the national average.  The professor couldn't say one way or the other whether Austin was more dangerous than the rest of the country, but did note that the number of car wrecks and level of danger will only continue to increase as Austin grows and becomes more congested.
